Chapter Eight

Jenna grabbed Amy’s sweatshirt and pulled her out of the shadows of the side yard into the light of the streetlamp.

“Jenna, what are you doing here? I thought you went for a walk.” Amy looked as if she was going to burst into tears.

Grant came up behind Jenna. “Take a deep breath,” he murmured in her ear. “They were just hugging.”

Jenna wanted to shout at Amy. She wanted to grasp the jean jacket and give the young man a good push. Instead, she took a deep breath. Grant was right. Amy hadn’t done anything wrong. Thank goodness he was here, or she might have done something she would have regretted later.

“Jeffery, what are you doing here?” Jenna asked, surprised by how calm she sounded.

“I…I came to see Amy, Miss Cartwright,” he said bashfully. “I came to visit her.”

Jenna looked at Amy. “You’re supposed to be at Mrs. Cannon’s.”

Amy stared at the ground, twisting her hands together. “I told a fib,” she confessed. “I told her I saw you outside the window. She thinks I went home with you.”

Jenna had to take another breath. She was shocked by Amy’s lie, but maybe even more shocked by the fact that Amy had the ability to lie and the forethought. This obviously had been planned out by Amy and Jeffery so that they could see each other alone. Amy had never done anything like this before.

Jenna felt the pressure of Grant’s hand on her shoulder. “Let’s go inside,” he suggested quietly.

Jenna ran her hand over her head, brushing her hair from her face. “Jeffery, hon, how did you get here? Did your brother bring you?”

He shook his head. “I walked, Miss Cartwright.”

“Across the highway?” Jenna asked with surprise. Route One was a busy highway with three lanes going in each direction. It wasn’t safe for anyone to cross on foot in the dark.

Jeffery lowered his head.

“Does anyone know you’re here?” Jenna persisted.

He didn’t respond, but continued to stare at his sneakers.

Jenna took another deep breath. “Well, let’s go inside. Do you know the phone number to Logan House, Jeffery? We can call and get someone to pick you up, or I’ll take you home.”

He followed Jenna, rattling off the number.

Jenna let the four of them into the house. “Do you need me to call Logan House, or can you do it, Jeffery?”

“I can do it.”

Jenna fetched the cordless phone for Jeffery. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Grant putting on some water for tea, and headed toward him, needing his strength and confidence. At the moment, she didn’t have a clue as to how to handle the situation.

As Jeffery made his phone call, Jenna went to Grant in the kitchen.

“You okay?” he asked. He grabbed her hand, gave it a squeeze and then released it.

She met his gaze and her heart gave a little patter. She was amazed that after this turn of events, she could still react to his touch this way. Tonight she and Grant had come
